The cartoon-inspired ink drawings are populated by&nbsp;vaguely&nbsp;familiar figures in&nbsp;suburban&nbsp;scenarios that are awash with anxiety and&nbsp;menace&ndash;&lsquo;High School Art Teacher in Hell,&rsquo; so to speak.<\/p>\n<p>The drawings are filled with humor of an ironic type that veers from the mildly political to the&nbsp;personal&nbsp;and opaque. The political&nbsp;humor&nbsp;is predictably&nbsp;sophomoric and, therefore,&nbsp;forgettable, The less overtly political drawings (luckily, the majority of the pieces) are often arresting.<\/p>\n<h3>&nbsp;The Good<\/h3>\n<div class=\"internal-linking-related-contents\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/2012\/10\/in-the-studio-oct-14-2012\/\" class=\"template-2\"><span class=\"cta\">Read more<\/span><span class=\"postTitle\">In the Studio Oct. 14 2012<\/span><\/a><\/div><p><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Milburn displays a lively sense of design. Each element&nbsp;is selected for some purpose, although what it is is often obscure. Perspectives tilt, clash, and wander away, yet most pieces, such as this one, hold together. Each drawing inhabits the same&nbsp;psychological&nbsp;space that could be characterized as a comic book, suburban <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Giorgio_de_Chirico\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">de Chirico<\/a>, where things are selected and placed according to some meaning or&nbsp;symbolism&nbsp;instead of other formal reasons<span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1459\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1459\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/2013\/03\/jason-milburn-at-william-busta-gallery\/coupons\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1459\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1459\" alt=\"'Who Needs Coupons?' by Jason Milburn\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/coupons.jpg?resize=400%2C482\" width=\"400\" height=\"482\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/coupons.jpg?w=400&amp;ssl=1 400w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/coupons.jpg?resize=248%2C300&amp;ssl=1 248w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1459\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&lsquo;Who Needs Coupons?&rsquo; by Jason Milburn<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>The Bad<\/h3>\n<p>I wish Milburn drew better.&nbsp;He shows none of the caricaturing skills of great cartoonists and draughtsmen. He frequently launches into what might be called &lsquo;high comic book&rsquo; style in many areas,&nbsp;especially&nbsp;in the faces, then lapses into a more&nbsp;simplistic&nbsp;approach elsewhere. This clash of treatments does not hold together, and warps the the stage in a way I doubt the artist intends.<\/p>\n<h3>The Ugly<\/h3>\n<div class=\"internal-linking-related-contents\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/2012\/10\/stephen-pentak-at-bonfoey\/\" class=\"template-2\"><span class=\"cta\">Read more<\/span><span class=\"postTitle\">Stephen Pentak at Bonfoey<\/span><\/a><\/div><p>All the pieces in the show are described as &lsquo;ink and found objects.&rsquo; Each drawing has some object affixed to it, such as the coins in the drawing (actually slugs). Unfortunately, the drawings are marred by conflicting stylistic devices which decrease their power.
