After art history,
\n<\/span>the widow drove me
\nto my slum studio.<\/p>\n

Its only north-facing window
\noverlooked the vacant lot
\nwhere I saw a shootout my first night there.<\/p>\n

\nthey hadn’t suspected
\nher husband’s bad heart.<\/p>\n

Dying,
\nhe had betrayed their now
\nbackward-pointing future.<\/p>\n

Kindness resembles love,
\nbut I had to go to

I ran back into the parking lot
\nas her taillights disappeared into the night.
