Last Sunday was perfect for getting outside. Windy and brisk, the sun broke through thick clouds to transform the afternoon gloom into a dazzling spectacle of light and shade–ideal for photography.<\/p>\n

I rambled around the Schoepfle Gardens<\/a> with my adored Nikon D5200<\/a> taking 200 photographs. The formal gardens intertwined with unkempt wooded areas provides ample subject matter even when the sun isn’t creating The Carnival of Fall’s Last Hurrah<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Part of the trail follows the Vermilion River<\/a> as it meanders through heavy woods. As the trail falls to the valley floor then back up, it has the important bonus of providing good exercise.<\/p>\n

The Vermilion River empties into Lake Erie and is the heart of the town with the same name–Vermilion<\/a>. The River, even at its mouth, is too shallow for the big freighters, so the heavy industry that spoils the waterfront of many lake cities passed over the city. As a consequence, Vermilion’s waterfront is totally given over to pleasure boating, which gives the city its picturesque quality.<\/p>\n

Examining the photographs at home, about 30% are suited to the watercolor series I contemplate. That’s a good success rate.<\/p>\n
