{"id":5565,"date":"2015-10-23T12:52:30","date_gmt":"2015-10-23T16:52:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/?p=5565"},"modified":"2015-10-23T17:19:35","modified_gmt":"2015-10-23T21:19:35","slug":"the-stendhal-syndrome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/2015\/10\/the-stendhal-syndrome\/","title":{"rendered":"The Stendhal Syndrome"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am familiar with the great&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stendhal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">French author Stendhal&rsquo;s<\/a> novels&ndash;<em>The Red and the Black<\/em>, and <em>The Charterhouse of Parma<\/em>&ndash;having read them some years ago, but until I read an&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/thepointmag.com\/2015\/examined-life\/stendhal-syndrome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article in the online magazine The Point<\/a> I&rsquo;d never hear about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stendhal_syndrome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stendhal Syndrome<\/a>. In his book about&nbsp;his travels to Italy,&nbsp;<em>Rome, Naples and Florence<\/em> (1817), Stendhal recounts his ecstatic emotions before greats works of art. Ecstasy was quickly replaced by a nervous attack accompanied by dizziness and light-headiness&ndash;Stendhal syndrome.<\/p>\n<div class=\"internal-linking-related-contents\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/2012\/10\/in-the-studio-oct-14-2012\/\" class=\"template-2\"><span class=\"cta\">Read more<\/span><span class=\"postTitle\">In the Studio Oct. 14 2012<\/span><\/a><\/div><p>In his article in <em>The Point<\/em>, author Kristofer Lenz, describes other cases, including&nbsp;very&nbsp;serious ones. Some sufferers have complete psychotic breakdowns. One sufferer lost the ability to speak and only regained it after months of therapy. According to the authorities Lenz quotes, works of art can become symbolic containers of emotion. In unhealthy people, works of art can become traps that disrupt healthy emotional processes. Apparently, works of the Renaissance are especially potent in this regard.<\/p>\n<p>Lenz recounts his Stendhal syndrome-like episode before the works of Bernini in Rome, which led him to research the subject and write about it. Stendhal syndrome is controversial and Lenz discusses its history and its detractors, which I found less engaging.
