{"id":5821,"date":"2016-02-23T12:21:20","date_gmt":"2016-02-23T17:21:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/?p=5821"},"modified":"2016-02-23T12:52:07","modified_gmt":"2016-02-23T17:52:07","slug":"in-the-studio-22116","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/2016\/02\/in-the-studio-22116\/","title":{"rendered":"In the studio 2\/21\/16"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Several busy days in the studio. \u00a0I worked on 10-12 paintings over the past few days, including <em>Sunday Parade<\/em>. \u00a0<em>Sunday Parade<\/em>\u00a0is finally locked into a good place (even though I still haven&#8217;t settled on its name). It felt like I was pushing it uphill for a long time. \u00a0I&#8217;m on the downward side now.<\/p>\n<p>Artists and writers writing about art often\u00a0talk such rot&#8211;almost more than any other field. \u00a0Much of what is written about art is thinly-disguised marketing. \u00a0For many, this isn&#8217;t a bug but a feature. \u00a0You won&#8217;t read about\u00a0&#8220;<em>totalizers totalizing the totality<\/em>&#8221; here.<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0sometimes I make little discoveries or understand some small aspect about art making. \u00a0One such is this:<\/p>\n<p><em>The eye reads something painted over something else as closer to it.<\/em> \u00a0This tiny discovery is extremely useful to know when you are painting areas with a lot of tones that are close to each other. \u00a0Ordering them by over-under adds significantly to the clarity of such passages.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5820\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5820\" style=\"width: 666px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/studio-2016-2-21\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5820\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5820\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/studio-2016-2-21.jpg?resize=666%2C494\" alt=\"The unfinished 'Sunday' or 'Sunday Parade' or 'Parade ' (I can't make up my mind) on the easel. \" width=\"666\" height=\"494\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/studio-2016-2-21.jpg?w=666&amp;ssl=1 666w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/studio-2016-2-21.jpg?resize=600%2C445&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/studio-2016-2-21.jpg?resize=300%2C223&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/studio-2016-2-21.jpg?resize=560%2C415&amp;ssl=1 560w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/studio-2016-2-21.jpg?resize=260%2C193&amp;ssl=1 260w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/studio-2016-2-21.jpg?resize=160%2C119&amp;ssl=1 160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 666px) 100vw, 666px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5820\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The unfinished &#8216;Sunday&#8217; or &#8216;Sunday Parade&#8217; or &#8216;Parade &#8216; (I can&#8217;t make up my mind) on the easel.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To change the subject. \u00a0I have used\u00a0Klean Strip OMS (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/2015\/04\/what-is-mineral-spirits\/\" target=\"_blank\">odorless mineral spirits<\/a>) for some time. \u00a0When I grabbed some the other day at the hardware store, I must not have been paying attention. \u00a0I poured the day&#8217;s portion\u00a0and\u00a0was shocked by how milky it was. \u00a0Unlike the usual water-clear OMS, this stuff is filmy like an acrylic medium. \u00a0I mistakenly purchased Klean Strips &#8220;green&#8221; version of OMS.<\/p>\n<p>Hating to waste money and not having any of my usual OMS on-hand, I tried the stuff. \u00a0Yeech! \u00a0The paint spreads and loses all character. It&#8217;s useless for painting. \u00a0 For my purposes, it&#8217;s expensive paint thinner. \u00a0The stuff <em>does<\/em> contain odorless mineral spirits (probably a\u00a0minute portion) which is a petroleum distillate, and God know what else. \u00a0They claim\u00a0it\u00a0is &#8220;inflammable.&#8221; \u00a0 But\u00a0it&#8217;s poison.<\/p>\n<p>The fumes of typical mineral spirits, or paint thinner, bother me. I only ever use it outside and then just to clean brushes or strip paint&#8211;house paint. \u00a0For painting on paintings I use turpentine (which does not bother me) and OMS. The trend continues that so-called &#8216;green&#8217; things work less well than the things they replace. \u00a0I can&#8217;t think of a single art-related material where its green &#8216;upgrade&#8217; wasn&#8217;t really a downgrade in terms of performance and usefulness.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Several busy days in the studio. \u00a0I worked on 10-12 paintings over the past few days, including Sunday Parade. \u00a0Sunday Parade\u00a0is finally locked into a good place (even though I still haven&#8217;t settled on its name).
