I made progress on Euclid Avenue I<\/em>\u00a0this morning. \u00a0Progress on the\u00a048″ x 60″ painting\u00a0has been slow at times. \u00a0This canvas is from a\u00a0stock of ‘professional grade’ canvases I bought some time back. \u00a0The surfaces on these ‘professional grade’ canvases are very poor–execrable. \u00a0I’ve had to spend a lot of time correcting them and still the grounds are sub par. \u00a0I paid a premium for these canvases in order to save time. \u00a0\u00a0I wrote about this experience<\/a>. \u00a0Since then, I prepare all of my own canvases. \u00a0Artists have to be wary of shysters, or–perhaps worse–craftsmen who do not understand what quality is.<\/p>\n

Anyway, fighting the ground has made progress slower than usual. \u00a0Fighting poor-quality materials is one reason I write so much about materials and craftsmanship.<\/p>\n

Using photographs in paintings<\/h3>\n

I’ve never enjoyed paintings that are intended to look like photographs. \u00a0When I was a young art student, I\u00a0felt\u00a0like the last figurative artist in the world, and, in my isolation, I pulled every bit of support\u00a0I could from artists like Pearlstein<\/a> and Leslie<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0But\u00a0photorealism<\/a> left me cold. \u00a0When many of my fellow students, equally frustrated\u00a0at having the tenets of modern art relentlessly shoved down our throats, turned to photorealism as a way out, I couldn’t follow them. \u00a0Photorealism seemed like a dead end. \u00a0I haven’t changed my opinion. \u00a0For a time, I refused to use photographs in my work.<\/p>\n

Now, they are another tool in my toolbox. \u00a0In preparation for my Playhouse Square series, I took hundreds of photographs around Cleveland’s Playhouse Square. \u00a0It’s like having\u00a0the entire Square as\u00a0a studio. \u00a0I can mix figures from different days moving through one of the Square’s street corners.<\/p>\n

Even though Euclid Avenue I<\/em> is unfinished, it is\u00a0a good example of my method. \u00a0This photograph provides the painting’s basis. \u00a0I moved the central figures forward toward the viewer, and then added figures from two other photographs taken on different days. \u00a0My trove of photos provides the figures for my drawings and paintings. \u00a0I have masses of photos on several other topics too.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
