Living in NE Ohio, I had to the visit the RNC. I spent two hours yesterday in downtown Cleveland. I took a lot<\/em> of photos but I was still surprised when I got home and discovered that I’d taken 1300 photos! \u00a0I’m always taking photos for use in my paintings, of course, and I was determined to take full advantage of this a once in a lifetime opportunity. \u00a0I doubt that I will travel to a future political\u00a0convention, and the chances of another coming to Cleveland is remote.<\/p>\n

The area around the convention was a madhouse–thousands of bodies moving. \u00a0I soon had my camera out and was snapping\u00a0furiously. \u00a0The opportunities\u00a0were endless. \u00a0Even the blistering sun didn’t bother me.<\/p>\n

4th Street was a solid mass of bodies<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

I went\u00a0along 4th St. several times. \u00a0Many of the media studios were set up there. \u00a0The media was everywhere. \u00a0I watched Andrea Mitchell interview someone and read from her teleprompter for a short time. \u00a0Everywhere people and media types were recording or photographing.<\/p>\n

Another strong impression was the number of police one saw. \u00a0I’ve never seen so many. \u00a0Police from 14 states were in Cleveland to help the local cops. \u00a0Between the police, the DHS agents, and Secret Service agents the 6-block area around the convention center was blanketed.<\/p>\n

Police were everywhere one looked<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

There were plenty of protestors of every stripe. \u00a0This man denounced the police (which he invariably called the ‘neo-Nazi Police), Republicans, Democrats, the Catholic Church, and sundry others. \u00a0Having said that, I was surprised by the gentility\u00a0of the affair. \u00a0I saw no signs of violence or other unpleasantness. \u00a0I don’t know what I was expecting and was pleasantly surprised by how calm things were.<\/p>\n

I’m so glad I went. \u00a0I have a treasure trove of photos. \u00a0I’ve only gone through 100 or so but I’m excited with the results so far.<\/p>\n
