{"id":6728,"date":"2017-02-15T18:24:14","date_gmt":"2017-02-15T23:24:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/?p=6728"},"modified":"2017-06-14T16:25:16","modified_gmt":"2017-06-14T20:25:16","slug":"review-utrecht-oils","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/2017\/02\/review-utrecht-oils\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: Utrecht oils"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&rsquo;s hard for me to understand this but until this week I never used Utrecht brand oils. &nbsp;I&rsquo;m not sure why this is. &nbsp;I&rsquo;ve visited their shops in NYC and Cleveland and ordered plenty of other things from them. &nbsp;True, I was disappointed with the easel I bought from them, but that was recent&nbsp;and doesn&rsquo;t&nbsp;explain why I&rsquo;ve never tried their oils in the past. &nbsp;Whatever the cause, I rectified it this week.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/utrecht-tubes\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6720\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/utrecht-tubes.gif?resize=800%2C538&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"538\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"internal-linking-related-contents\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/2012\/10\/in-the-studio-oct-14-2012\/\" class=\"template-2\"><span class=\"cta\">Read more<\/span><span class=\"postTitle\">In the Studio Oct. 14 2012<\/span><\/a><\/div><p>I bought four tubes including a 150ml tube of the all important flake white. &nbsp;Here is my palette with my usual assortment of straight-from-the-tube colors and mixtures.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>ultramarine violet<\/li>\n<li>burnt sienna<\/li>\n<li>Naples yellow<\/li>\n<li>flake white<\/li>\n<li>cool grays made from paynes&nbsp;gray and flake white<\/li>\n<li>warm grays made from ivory black, raw umber, and flake white<\/li>\n<li>flesh tones mixed from burnt sienna and flake white (between 2 and 4)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6724\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6724\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/ut-pal\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6724\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/ut-pal.gif?resize=800%2C535&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"535\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6724\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Before using the palette<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Here is the palette after several painting sessions. The flake white is acceptable. &nbsp;This is a big deal because&nbsp;reasonably-priced flake white is becoming harder and harder to find. &nbsp;I will certainly buy more.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6721\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6721\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/pal-after\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6721\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/pal-after.gif?resize=800%2C518&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"518\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6721\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">After using the palette<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"internal-linking-related-contents\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/2012\/10\/stephen-pentak-at-bonfoey\/\" class=\"template-2\"><span class=\"cta\">Read more<\/span><span class=\"postTitle\">Stephen Pentak at Bonfoey<\/span><\/a><\/div><p>Most colors are single-pigment paints, which is a good thing, of course. &nbsp;I like the ultramarine violet. &nbsp;I use this color for cool grays so I use a lot of it. &nbsp;The burnt sienna is too orange for me. &nbsp;This isn&rsquo;t much of a knock against Utrecht. &nbsp;Many other brands also make too-orange burnt sienna.<\/p>\n<p>The Naples yellow is a blend of several pigments. &nbsp;Utrecht labels many blends as &lsquo;hues,&rsquo; (as do other manufacturers), but not all of them. &nbsp;Keep this in mind when buying this brand.<\/p>\n<h3>Grade<\/h3>\n<div class=\"internal-linking-related-contents\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thomasparkerhudson.com\/wordpress\/2012\/10\/cleveland-museum-of-art-staff-exhibition\/\" class=\"template-2\"><span class=\"cta\">Read more<\/span><span class=\"postTitle\">Cleveland Museum of Art Staff Exhibition<\/span><\/a><\/div><p>Decent mid-range paint.
