Yesterday was a lucky day–I discovered an artist new to me: Carl Gaertner<\/a>\u00a0(1898-1952). \u00a0Gaertner’s reputation is almost entirely local \u00a0to Cleveland, as \u00a0Robert Smith<\/a>‘s is confined to\u00a0Dayton.<\/p>\n

Gaertner was born in Cleveland and lived in and around there until his death. \u00a0He taught for many years at the Cleveland Institute of Art<\/a>. \u00a0The Bonfoey Gallery<\/a> has several of his works–oils and gouache–on display just now. \u00a0 One of his much loved themes was Cleveland itself. \u00a0He painted numerous scenes\u00a0of\u00a0everyday life during Cleveland’s brawny\u00a0heyday–scenes filled with urban and industrial artifacts. \u00a0Bonfoey has several wonderful gouaches of these subjects.<\/p>\n

Later, if my information is correct, he\u00a0moved\u00a0outside the city and took up themes of rural life, such as this delightful oil.<\/p>\n
