I’ve been drawing a lot lately. I made this small study while preparing a large (for me) new painting for my Amusement Park series. I’d planned to make an oil sketch but decided to heighten the lead drawing with white chalk and call it finished.
So, it’s a lead drawing on a toned canvas, 20″ x 24.” In this photo, the study is propped on the large canvas, which is 42″ 54.”
Here’s a photo of both versions. The lead ground in the small version is toned with raw umber. In the large version, the lead ground is toned with cool gray. I prefer the umber ground.
I took out the haughty girl on the left of the study and replaced her with two other figures. I also added another figure to the right side. I like the haughty girl drawing and intend to use her in another painting.
I am going on a short trip tomorrow and when I get back I’ll begin painting the large version.
