Julie Friedman at Busta Gallery
In her show, Perennial Shift, at the William Busta Gallery, Julie Friedman exhibits a print maker’s love of process. Initially, the pieces (a useful generic term) reminded me of the silhouettes you can have made at Coney Island or Cedar Point. Like those silhouettes, these are cut-outs; most are black on white. On closer inspection, they are the product of a labor-intensive, and
Carl Gaertner
Yesterday was a lucky day–I discovered an artist new to me: Carl Gaertner (1898-1952). Gaertner’s reputation is almost entirely local to Cleveland, as Robert Smith‘s is confined to Dayton. George Mauersberger at Bonfoey
I walked into the George Mauersberger exhibit at Bonfoey expecting to see a passel of prints. Nope. While a few prints are on display, drawings and watercolors make up the lion’s share of the show. Even so, Mauersberger has a printmaker’s personality—a love of process and fondness for drawing. Most of the pieces on display are tromp
Stephen Pentak at Bonfoey
The Bonfoey Gallery (1700 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH) is the kind of establishment I adore: it’s an art gallery in the business of showing real, contemporary artists. Places like it are rare outside New York City, and I tip my hat to them. I make a point of visiting every new show as well as
