This is the first time I’ve shown Break. Break is 40″ x 50″ and I’ve had four painting sessions. Break is another of my Playhouse Square series. The painting in the background, Euclid Avenue II, is another painting in the series. The painting on the right-side is Taking Note, which is close to being done.

Today’s session was the 4th for Man and a Woman in a Room. I don’t know how many more sessions it will need–not a clue. Paintings take on their own personality and this one is adamant bout the direction it wants to go.

I’ve spent a lot of time this week drawing–preparing large paintings that have complicated designs. This morning I pulled out some smaller pieces to do some actual painting. The upper painting, titled Girl in a White Blouse, is my second attempt of this subject. The first effort was smaller and I ruined it by using Old Holland

Yesterday’s session with Taking Note was my 6th, according to my trusty studio journal. It’s coming along–so far so good. With such a simple design, the drawing has to carry the load. Well, that’s true for all my paintings, but in the more complicated ones there are other things that can make or break them, such

I showed Sunday Parade once before when I probably should not have–it was too raw. It’s overcast today and the studio lights (even my ‘natural light’ lamps) wash-out the colors, but I think you can get a sense of what is going on. Sunday Parade is 42″ x 56.” Although Sunday Parade is an urban street scene,

The under-painting for Woman in Purple Boots is finished. This means that everything has a layer of paint–darks, lights, and local colors. The last time I showed this in a ‘Studio Corner’ post it was still pretty raw. Woman in Purple Boots is an example of how I prefer to prepare painting surfaces. There is a

Bad easel
I whined about my previously-praised easel earlier this month. I’ve had the Utrecht-branded easel less than a year, and I complained about having to replace one of its casters. The way the casters are attached is poorly implemented; once one detaches, it’s impossible to reattach. While I was replacing the caster, the support brace split. #@!**@#!!! I glued

Yesterday’s painting session was the 4th for Taking Note. The underapinting is finished, which is fast (for me) considering it’s large size–42″ x 56″. But it’s only a single figure and the design is simple and straightforward. In the background on the floor is the new Sunday Parade, which is also 42″ x 56″. After several
