This is the first update for the study about making the painting titled The Call. In the first post, the drawing was finalized and a neutral ground applied to the canvas.
The Call is 36″ x 48″.
After the ground was thoroughly dry, I began the under-painting. I work the under-painting with middle-dark tones using the ground throughout.
During this phase, no tone lighter than the ground is applied.
Once the under-painting is finished, I will work over the entire surface pushing tones in both directions and begin the local coloring.
Over the years, I’ve varied my approach–sometimes more structured than here, sometimes less–but the centrality of drawing has remained constant.
The next update will be when the under-painting is finished.
