In the Studio 5/26/2013

This large painting (6′ x 8′) is a pain to work on in my somewhat cramped studio. Don’t get me wrong, I love my studio overlooking the lake, but compared to my last studio in Indian Mills, NJ, it’s small. Large paintings like this one are difficult to move and store.

One thing interesting about this painting–tentatively titled ‘Ritual’–is the use of an egg/oil emulsion, which can be seen in the figure on the right. In the past I’ve used egg tempera passages in oil paintings. Recently I’ve used the egg-oil emulsion instead.  I mix zinc white pigment into the egg-oil medium. The resulting paint is wonderful–both crisp and flexible (and fast drying).

I don’t like the title for this painting. If anyone has a better one, drop me a line.
