Last Sunday was perfect for getting outside. Windy and brisk, the sun broke through thick clouds to transform the afternoon gloom into a dazzling spectacle of light and shade–ideal for photography.
I rambled around the Schoepfle Gardens with my adored Nikon D5200 taking 200 photographs. The formal gardens intertwined with unkempt wooded areas provides ample subject matter even when the sun isn’t creating The Carnival of Fall’s Last Hurrah.
Part of the trail follows the Vermilion River as it meanders through heavy woods. As the trail falls to the valley floor then back up, it has the important bonus of providing good exercise.
The Vermilion River empties into Lake Erie and is the heart of the town with the same name–Vermilion. The River, even at its mouth, is too shallow for the big freighters, so the heavy industry that spoils the waterfront of many lake cities passed over the city. As a consequence, Vermilion’s waterfront is totally given over to pleasure boating, which gives the city its picturesque quality.
Examining the photographs at home, about 30% are suited to the watercolor series I contemplate. That’s a good success rate.
